Attorney-General’s Department, Canberra (AGD)
The Department provides information on the institution of marriage and the legal requirements involved. It is important to understand what steps to take in the lead up to getting married. Marriage and Marriage Celebrants are regulated by the Marriage Act 1961. The Department also administers the Marriage Celebrants Program through the Marriage Celebrants Section of the Civil Justice Division.

The Coalition of Celebrant Associations is the national peak representative body for marriage celebrant organisations with the Attorney-General’s Department who meet twice yearly in Canberra. The Alliance of Celebrants Queensland’s representative is also the Vice President of the CoCA Committee.
Department of Immigration and Border Protection Prospective Marriage Visa
This visa allows you to enter Australia and marry your intended spouse (fiancé(e)) within the visa’s nine (9) month validity period. Your fiance(e) must be one of the following:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- an eligible New Zealand citizen.
